Roof Leak Repair in Judson, Greenville SC (29611)
Judson Mill opened in 1912 and its 565 village houses were sold to the residents in 1939. The village was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018 — which makes the roofs here both old and worth doing properly.
Greenville SC Roofing Pros is a referral service connecting Judson homeowners with independent roofing contractors. We do not carry out roofing work ourselves.
A 1912 mill village, listed in 2018
Judson Mill opened in 1912, producing fine lawn handkerchief material with around 200 employees and their families living in 75 houses. It was named for the Furman professor Charles Judson. The village grew into a self-sustaining community with gardens, sports teams, a streetcar stop and its own radio station, and by 1939 it had three churches, a school, a community building and a baseball field clustered around Judson Crossing.
In 1939 the company sold all 565 village houses to the people living in them. The Judson Mill Village was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.
That history matters for a roof in two ways. These are small, simply built houses that have been in private hands for more than eighty years, so each one has its own independent repair history. And National Register listing raises a question worth settling before you order material — see the note further down.

What the roofs are like here
- Compact 1910s village cottages, mostly simple gable or hip roofs with modest spans.
- Board decking rather than plywood, often with visible gaps between boards.
- Independent repair histories. Houses sold off individually in 1939 have been maintained by eighty years of different owners and different budgets.
- Small chimneys on the original heating plan, many now decorative but still interrupting the roof.
- Later porches and rear additions, frequently with low-slope roofs.
What tends to go wrong
- Chimney flashing sealed instead of rebuilt — the cheapest repair on a small house, and the one that fails most reliably.
- Porch and addition roofs at the end of their life. See low-slope repair.
- Soft decking around long-standing slow leaks.
- Mismatched previous repairs, where a succession of owners used whoever was cheapest.
- Leaks that moved. Water entering at one point on a small roof can still surface a room away. See leak detection.

What National Register listing does and does not mean
This comes up often enough to be worth stating plainly. National Register listing is largely honorific for a privately owned house — it does not, by itself, restrict what you may do with your own roof using your own money.
The designation that can restrict work is local: a City of Greenville preservation overlay district brings design review for exterior changes visible from the street. Those are two different things, and plenty of contractors conflate them. Confirm the standing of your specific address with the City of Greenville before you commit to a change of material, profile or colour. A like-for-like repair is rarely the issue.

Roof leak questions from Judson homeowners
Does National Register listing stop me re-roofing my Judson house?
Not in itself. National Register listing is primarily honorific for a privately owned home. What can restrict visible exterior work is local designation as a City of Greenville preservation overlay district, which is a separate thing. Check your specific address with the city before ordering material.
These houses are small. Does that make a repair cheap?
Cheaper than a large roof, yes, but less than people expect. Much of the cost in a roof repair is setup, access and the detail work at chimneys and junctions, and a small house still has all of those. What a small roof does genuinely reduce is the material cost and the time on the field of the roof.
Can original board decking be kept?
Usually, if it is sound, dry and still holds fasteners. Rotten boards are cut out and replaced. On a house of this age, ask the contractor specifically how additional decking is priced if it is found, because on village housing it frequently is.
